Water has always been a potent driver of metaphor, myth, and symbolism; the most foundational stories of our culture are full of water, from holy scripture to the French Symbolist poetry of Milhaud’s Cantique du Rhône and beyond. But the material relationship that we as humans have with water continue to change: climate change is causing certain geographical areas to become more prone to drought, others to flood more, and major storms to become both more frequent and more severe. These are not metaphors, but realities that couldn’t be more consequential. Fluid Dynamics is our small and incomplete meditation on this dichotomy of poetry and hydrology that undergirds our existence on this planet.
